Here is where I will be posting technology tips, hints, news and views to
help you make technology make a difference. I use weblog or blog technology to
write and publish these articles simply and easily from any computer on the web.
Visit Blogger to find out about

I must find some time to try out Engadget's How-to-Tuesday article on
how to make 3-D photos.

Perhaps I'll take the day off tomorrow?
I am the only user of my PC and was always being asked to logon on start-up. This can be avoided by setting Windows XP to automatically log you on.
Important: If you turn on autologon, starting up Windows XP becomes faster and more convenient. However, using this feature can pose a security risk. This feature permits other users to start your computer and to use the account that you establish to automatically log on.
To enable automatic logon:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
- In the dialog box that appears, click to clear the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box, and then click OK.
musicplasma is a cool Flash site. Type in the name of a band and see the plasma of similar bands.

Not happy to pay 8p a minute to 0870 'national' numbers or 3p a minute to 'local rate' 0845 numbers? Well I am not 'cos I have an all inclusive deal on my phone calls giving me unlimited calls to UK landlines. I also resent that fact that 0870 number owners are getting a cut of up to 5p a minute of my money when I call them.
SAYNOTO0870.COM is a website that lists the standard geographical landline numbers for a large number of 0870 and 0845 companies. Look up the 'free' number there before you call 0870 in the future.
Been playing with
Skype recently. Seems to work pretty well. I use my webcam microphone and external speakers and all is well. Dramatically better that any of the other Instant Messaging audio options, except of course iChat on the Mac. Skype is free and ad free as well. Rumour is that they want to build up a load of happy voice users and then when they add video to calls they will charge for the video features. Give Skype a try - you can test it by phoning me. My Skype id is johnmiles.

Check out the
pPod site.
"21 July 2004 - Today NYKRIS launched pPod - the world's first iPod based interactive audio service.
pPod combines text, spoken word audio, and music to deliver a guide to London's public loos – truly a convenience for iPod users on the move! Entertaining audio reviews and even accompanying sound tracks such as Handel's 'Water Music' and 'Cosmic Winds' will help users to locate their nearest (and loveliest!) loos."
The full download for XP2 is 256MB, but
Computerworld says: "The average download for Windows XP Professional is expected to be about 100MB, according to Microsoft. The average download for customers with Windows XP Home Edition is estimated at 80MB. Customers who need SP1 can expect the download to be 20MB larger, Microsoft said." Microsoft recommends users turn on Automatic Updates to get it, though it could take days or weeks cos there are quite a few million folks who need to update. I haven't managed to get the update show up with a manual 'Windows Update' so I suggest you do turn on automatice updates. However, if you are not on Broadband, don't bother - find a CD version of the update.
I like this Flash
