Low-Tech Gadget of the month - The Lock Cup
There is no surer sign of the complete breakdown of society than this: the Lock-Cup, a coffee mug for the paranoid that can only be used when its owner inserts a special key into a hole in the cup's side! Via Engadget

Viruses that deceive and viruses that ensnare...
A computer virus is just like any other program. It cannot run without the user's consent. And it is prepared to go to any fraudulent length to obtain this consent. Here's a selection from Symantec of the latest tricks and some advice on how not to fall foul of deceiving viruses.

Privacy...not for long
The American Civil Liberties Union has created a clever animation about how personal data is spreading via linked databases to create the most detailed dossiers on all of us. The scenario, a call to a pizza-delivery service, is exaggerated. But it's clearly the direction in which we're heading. The ACLU offers specific suggestions on how to slow this rampaging privacy invasion. From Dan Gillmore's eJournal

Voice Mapping
I am not yet ready to spend one or two thousand pounds on a GPS navigation system so this new service from Voicemap looks interesting. Voicemap provide a new service of personalised directions, straight to your existing mobile telephone, regardless of which network you are using. They use the signal transmitted by your mobile telephone to establish your position. Should you become lost, they can tell where you are in seconds, and use that information to guide you to your destination. You pay a small £10 sub that entitle you to three calls and then pay per call after that.

I've given up on Microsoft's Internet Explorer
There has been plenty of press recently about all the security holes in Internet Explorer. A week ago I decided to check out some of the alternatives out there. Mozilla Firefox is the browser I have decided to run with. Not only is it far more secure, clean and fast but it benefits from a whole load of neat themes and extensions to make your browsing simpler and more productive. I'll publish my favourite extensions in a future tip. But one you should install right off is the IE View plugin in (for Microsoft Windows systems), which allows the current page or a selected link to be opened in Internet Explorer. Some of my banking sites insist me using IE and this extension makes it easy to revert. Firefox is also available for Mac OSX and is far more mature and flexible than Safari. Try it.

Control Your Dreams
My probably useless technology gadget of the week is the Dream Workshop, a gadget you keep by your bed to help you choose your dreams. How does it work (or not work, as the case may be)? You attach a photograph of what you want to dream about to it and then record some key word prompts, then a few hours later, when you should at the part of the sleep cycle where dreaming occurs, it plays the recorded word prompts back.
